Morning Brief: Saturday, October 3
One hundred nine feeds. Two weeks. 5,350 items reduced to what follows. (what we track, how we crawl, subscribe)
Saturday is thin enough that Latent Space's own daily roundup says so outright: "not much happened today." The one genuinely new story is Google testing an AI data center in orbit; everything else of weight is Friday's carryover, led by the Flock surveillance crackdown moving from the courts to Congress in the same 24 hours.
A federal judge ruled a Flock license-plate search "indiscriminate mass surveillance" and unconstitutional on Friday, and Senator Sanders introduced a bill the same day to ban the federal government from using Flock outright — a legislative response landing directly on a court ruling, after two weeks of EFF and 404 Media documenting Flock's spread through local police departments. It runs alongside a second, quieter story: Apple tightening macOS Full Disk Access specifically because of AI agent risk, platform vendors hardening defaults as fast as the threat model they're defending against.

- Google Tests AI Data Center In Space
- Slashdot, 2026-10-03. The day's one genuinely new story: a first flight test of data-center hardware in orbit, not another paper study.
- Federal Judge Rules a Flock Search Was 'Indiscriminate Mass Surveillance' and Unconstitutional
- 404 Media, 2026-10-02. A federal court puts a name on what EFF has been documenting for weeks: Flock's license-plate dragnet crosses a constitutional line.
- Sanders introduces bill to ban the federal government from using Flock
- TechCrunch, 2026-10-02. A legislative response arriving the same day as the court ruling above, not months later.
- Apple says it's tightening macOS 'Full Disk Access' controls due to new risks from AI agents
- TechCrunch, 2026-10-02. A platform vendor naming AI agents directly as the reason for a default-permissions change, not a hypothetical.
- New Mexico Wants Meta To Pay $40 Billion In Penalties For Cambridge Analytica Scandal
- Slashdot, 2026-10-02. A decade-old data-misuse case still generating new, large state enforcement actions.
- \[AINews\] not much happened today
- Latent Space, 2026-10-03. A rare admission from the newsletter that tracks this landscape daily; the quiet matches what the warehouse shows.

Tail
- Flock's path from local controversy to federal legislation took about two weeks
- a court ruling it unconstitutional and a Senate bill to ban it outright arrived on the same day, after EFF and 404 Media spent two weeks documenting the spread.
- Anthropic and OpenAI spent Friday on opposite moves
- Anthropic funding 10,000 engineers through its Frontier Academy while OpenAI published a guide for building on GPT-6 — infrastructure investment and product rollout running in parallel, not sequence.
