What Never Moved: Rebuilding Clojure's Stable Core from Behaviour

Table of Contents

A draft for the proposal shelf. Not submitted anywhere. Status: Hold until the work exists.

1. Pitch

A few abstractions held still for twenty years while everything under them was rewritten. Rebuild them without reading the source and see what forced their shape.

2. Abstract

A small set of Clojure's abstractions has not moved while the implementation beneath them changed. Rebuilding them from observed behaviour alone, without reading the implementation, shows which parts of the design were forced and which were chosen.

3. Audience, format, venue

Audience
Clojure conference audiences; language designers.
Format
40 minutes, or an Onward! essay.
Where
Clojure/conj, Onward! at SPLASH.

4. Review

The L7 review calls this the best talk on the shelf in a year and says not to submit it before the rebuild exists: the note describes a research initiative with findings so far. Concept only; there is no public repository behind it. Hold.

5. Backing

Public repositories:

  • None public. Concept only.
